BATTLE OF HEREFORD 1055 – David Whitehead

Battle of Hereford 1055

Thursday 15 May 2025 2.00pm, Herefordshire Archives & Records Centre.

The Battle of Hereford. Throughout its early history Hereford was a convenient base for English campaigns into Wales. In the Middle Ages it was protected by a hinterland dense with castles but in 1055 it was isolated and protected only by an amateur cavalry force. Moreover, its fine defences built in the age of Alfred the Great, were in an advanced state of decay. The city and its new cathedral were thus an easy prey for the Welsh king Gruffydd ap Llewelyn and his experienced national army. As part of the Woolhope Club at HARC programme,

David explores the momentous events of the battle.
