Herefordshire Histories Festival
CREATE AN EVENT.ADD YOUR EVENT
We have a form. A dozen sections, which all work together to create…
- Your event page.
- The intro panel people see on the Events pages and elsewhere on the site.
- An address pin with basic detail on the county locations map.
- A Google-friendly page so that your event can be found easily, we hope.
Scroll down and fill in the form, submit, and we’ll do the rest. You can do this on a phone, but laptop or desktop will be easier.
NOTE, WE HAVE TO CHECK YOUR EVENT DETAILS, AND THEN WE PUBLISH IT. FILLING IN THE FORM DOES NOT MEAN IMMEDIATE EVENT LISTING.
To know first how each bit works, click the HOW IT ALL WORKS button below. We recommend that! Then you know exactly what you are doing.
At least, look down at the form sections, and get your data ready to enter. Best to be organised.
BUT if you do find partway you need more info, you can stop and save your progress so far. Just click/tap SAVE AND COMPLETE LATER, and see a link to use later.
Any problem, check the How it All Works section, and then if needed, contact… info@herefordshirehistories.org.
Hi, I’m Robin, webguy for HHF.
I’ve created a dummy example page to show Event workings. My ficticious event is a ‘Pirate Club’ meeting in my village hall in Putley. Shows below.Â
ALL the info needed comes from the form you complete. Below is the individual event page, in desktop view. It uses all the form elements.
EVENT PAGE
One way folk may find this page is from the LOCATIONS page. On the big map are Festival icons. Click/tap one and an event info panel appears. Here is the Pirate event panel. The MORE INFO link takes you to the actual page.
It shows the ‘Featured’ Image, Event Title, location address, and ‘Excerpt’.Â
MAP EVENT PANEL
Or on the various EVENTS pages, are similar info panels. We ask you to set date and region categories, and these control the exact pages these panels appear.
It shows the ‘Featured’ Image, Event Title, and ‘Excerpt’.Â
EVENTS PAGES PANEL
Apart from directly on the site, we must encourage Google to list your event. Think about one or two KEYWORDS potential visitors might use. And use keywords in the form. More at the end of this section.
Below I describe the form sections using my ‘Pirate Event’ page details as example.
THE FORMÂ
All the events must have a consistent look and include the essential information. This means a lot of sections, sorry.
First the Event Title. A few words only so it fits on phones and stuff. This is in the top heading panel, on the main location map, and in the event page info panels, and must have your keyword(s) in it. Important.
With it is the ‘Featured’ image, so called because it’s used all over. Landscape way better than portrait. Use the ‘Choose Image File’ button, and find your pic and select. Image will upload.
Event Title and Featured image form sections and ‘pirate’ examples.
The Secondary title fills in detail missed in the page title. Optional.
Plus the ‘Excerpt’ as it’s called in WordPress, ‘cos of its importance. A short advert for the event. Where, when, with a quick summary. Shows in the event page as the first bit of descriptive copy, on the main map, and event info panels. Google likes it too! Use keyword(s).Â
Secondary Title and Excerpt form sections and ‘pirate’ examples.
The Full Description is your supporting copy.
Be nice with first paragraph in bold (select and click/tap first icon – B). Use short sentences and break up into paragraphs. Be easy to read!
If you’re copying and pasting, check it’s plain text. Emails for example can have hidden formatting. If in doubt, paste into WORD first, strip out formatting, then copy. But if it ends up looking odd to us we’ll correct it for you. Try to include your Focus Keyword (see below) once or twice.
And who is the contact for event info? The Event Email Contact. Small text addition please: start with… mailto: then the email address (no space between). For example, mailto:contact@example.org
An email contact button will be created.
Event Description and Email Contact sections and ‘pirate’ examples.
You may have a second image use on this page. Use the ‘Choose Image File’ button, and find your pic and select. Image will upload.
Optional second image link, and ‘pirate’ example.
Now, we need the exact Event Location, Full address with postcode and UK at the end. Importantly this tells Google how to create a map (with directions) so folk can find you. And places a pin on the main location map.
This may not be the same as your Organisation address. Add that if there is one.
Add the Organisation name and website (use format: https://www.example.com). To get this site address you could go to your site, and in the address bar at the top selct all and copy.
Event location and organisation details, and ‘pirate’ examples.
Events need to be shown in some sort of order. So all the events on the same day, or in the same area can be viewed together. For that we use Event Categories.
Choose the date or dates from the dropdown list, then at the bottom of the dropdown select a region. East, West, North, South or the Hereford area. You do not have to be exact but only choose one! Don’t know? The toggle below will open out to show you a map.

ALSO (not shown on your event page) …
GETTING THE EVENT GOOGLE-FRIENDLY
We ask for one or two words you might use to find the event page on Google. This is called ‘Focus Keyword’ and is key to good ‘searchability’ (SEO we call it). With my dummy event it has got to be ‘pirate’ (if choosing singular or plural, go singular). One (maybe two) word(s) that folk might search for on Google.
The ‘searchability’ gizmo we use is Rank Math, and on the right is how it looks on the backend of the site. Note, how ‘pirate’ is in the page title (B), page URL (comes from Page Title), and Excerpt (D). Those inclusions with the ‘pirate’ keyword in the description copy, give a decent ‘searchability’ score.
And greatly betters the chance of your event being discovered! Worth the effort.
Plus we will want to contact you, so your name and email please.
And with that, press SUBMIT EVENT and you’re done. Note, you can part-fill and finish later. You’ll get a unique link, copy and keep.
