The Hereford Diocesan Guild of Bellringers is celebrating its 140th Anniversary. Formed in the Victorian age, as a result of the ‘Belfry Reform’ movement as many clergy became concerned about the behaviour of bellringers (drunkenness and swearing were commonplace).
Things have changed somewhat since then, but the Hereford Diocesan Guild continues to work to encourage the ringing of bells for church service and all the important occasions in our lives – ringing our for weddings, Christmas, New Year, and tolling in remembrance.
The display will combine the records of the Guild together with a wider reflection of how bells have been entwined in our lives and folklore.
Church Bellringing is an almost unique heritage craft, come and find out more.
