THURSDAY 21 MAY, HEREFORD AREA

Remembering the Canary Girls

A Commemorative Art Installation and History Tour at the Shell Store, Munitions Factory
Artist Anita Marles will be exhibiting work inspired by the 'Canary Girls' at the Shell Store, Rotherwas, alongside a talk, tea and tour, taking place on May 21st, 11:00am-12:00pm.

Anita Marles is an artist and architect and will be exhibiting a work centred on female munitions
workers in the first and second World Wars. These women, referred to as ‘Canary Girls,’ have
inspired Anita to create a sculpture expressing their efforts and sacrifices.

The work will be hosted by the Shell Store, Rotherwas, from 15 – 21 May with a talk by the artist
on 21 May at 11:00am. This talk will be followed by a short tour by Shell Store representative, Maeve, of the Rotherwas Munitions Factory and nearby remaining ‘blast walls,’ where the Canary Girls carried out their most dangerous work. At the end, we will gather for tea and biscuits, and guests are welcome to watch a short film about the history of the Shell Store, or visit the nearby Munitions Cafe.

Anita Marles is an American artist and architect based in the UK. Through sculpture and painting,
she explores the topics of climate and nature, social justice, social dynamics, politics and
technology.
