Roman Leintwardine was unusual as a settlement. It is protected with an impressive Vallum, partly still visible today. It neither fits the form of a Roman fort nor a vicus. We think that there is potential evidence of some continuity with pre Roman occupation. The Anglo-Saxon period is less clear but documentary evidence and recent research into the construction of the church suggests that the importance of the settlement in the Anglo-Saxon period has not been recognised.
We will look at some evidence of remains in the History Room, the village and at the Church. Terry Pearson will explain recent findings and summarise how we are developing our understanding of the early settlement history.
