CIDER MILL at the Bell Inn, Yarpole, Open every day except Monday & Tuesday of the festival.
The pub still retains the original Mill and large millstone, dating from the 17th century; used for pulping the apples. The Cider Mill was powered using a horse. Horses had to be trained to push the mill which turned the millstone, crushing the apple crop in the trough. The pulp was then transferred into special cloths, called cheeses, and arranged on the press. The press was tightened, using man power, crushing the pulp to produce the juice that was used to make cider.
The Mill and press were originally in a separate barn adjacent to the pub. The building was renovated and incorporated into the pub building in the 1980’s. However, the mill and press were untouched. It is still possible to see the stable outline used for the horse.
The pub previously owned 12 acres of orchard which produced the apples for the cider.
Why not sample a glass of local cider in the pub? The pub is community owned and managed. We operate with a combination of volunteers and paid staff. Come and visit us.
We will be open for lunch on Wednesday 14th May and Thursday 15th May offering a cider and apple based lunch.
