Wednesday 14th May 7.00pm. Christ Church, Llanwarne

Church Heritage: connecting with the past – An illustrated talk by John Handby

From the oldest church buildings still in existence to the beliefs and practices of the middle ages the church held an important position in the life of the community. Religion was fundamental to society; the way people viewed themselves within it as well as being the basis of many of the laws that governed their lives. Religion formed the mores bounding the way people lived in what was perceived as their brief sojourn on earth before passing to the afterlife. Until the famous split between Henry VIII and the church of Rome the catholic church governed the way people lived their lives, the bible was in a language most people did not understand and priests interpreted the world of God as they saw fit.

Church buildings provide an amazing reflection of this vanished world and an opportunity to connect directly with the past. John’s talk will draw on various examples in different parts of the country to illustrate aspects of this before focusing on particular examples closer to home in Herefordshire.

Entry is free – retiring collection
