OP BLACKOUT – The arrest of Admiral Doenitz

Saturday 17 May 2025 6.30pm, Hereford Town Hall

When HITLER committed suicide, he nominated Grand Admiral DOENITZ as his successor. Doenitz set up his government at FLENSBERG in North Germany. On 23rd May 1945 the Allied Forces in NW EUROPE mounted OPERATION BLACKOUT to arrest the members of Doenitz’s Government. The HEREFORDSHIRE REGIMENT took a key part in this operation.
On display will be DOENITZ’ car pennants and Grand Admiral’s baton, both “liberated” by the Herefords. Reunited for only the THIRD time in the past 50 years, through the support of the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum.

This reception and presentation is ticketed and costs £20.
Bookings available at Hfdlimuseum@gmail.com

The Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum aims to perpetuate the memory and deeds of the regiment and its soldiers. The 1st Battalion had landed over the beaches of Normandy on D+6 and fought across France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany. The Regiment suffered over 250 fatalities.
The Museum is volunteer run and receives no formal funding; this event will raise much needed funds to maintain the Museum. You can support the museum by making a donation or becoming a Friend of the Museum; details are at:
