Friday 16 May, tours at 11am & 2pm. Snodhill Castle
Join Garry Crook, castleologist & Chair of the Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust for a tour of the castle and its fortified site.
Snodhill Castle is the hidden gem of Norman Marcher castles, forgotten & neglected for over 350 years but now steadily revealing its secrets to archaeologists (as seen in Digging for Britain) and enthusiasts as one of the most unusual castles in the Marches. On the guided tour Garry Crook, castleologist and leading light in the castle’s rescue, will share the discoveries with you as you walk below the bailey walls, climb to the keep to see the views of the Golden Valley, Vagar Hill, the 1000+ acre deer park and medieval landscape below that so entranced Kilvert in 1871; examine the newly-conserved remains of England’s only Royal Chapel in a non-Royal castle, and explore the Sheriff of Hereford’s fortified ‘panic room’ with its armoured latrines and private well – now a safe haven for amphibians.
We invite a donation of £10/adult for tours which last about an hour. Paths are uneven and slippery, with tree roots, stumps and burrows and there are steep drops everywhere – so take care, take wellies, and keep an eye on children!
