HEREFORD AREA, FRIDAY 16 MAY

NATIONAL TRUST WEIR GARDENS ARCHAEOLOGIST WALK

Friday 16 May 2025 2.00 – 3.00pm, Weir Garden.

We’re celebrating the fascinating history of Herefordshire as part of the Herefordshire Histories Festival with a chance to join National Trust Archaeologist, Vivianna Caroli, on a guided walk. The Weir Garden sits in a site which follows the course of the River Wye and is rooted within layers of history. Excavations at The Weir Garden by ITV’s Time Team in 2005 revealed Roman roots, including remains of a large riverside structure and a hidden mosaic.

In 2014, archaeologists revisited the site, uncovering more of the mosaic and an opus signinum bath. Interestingly, The Weir Garden sits near what was once a thriving Roman town, now known as Kenchester.

Vivi will guide you around the site, showcasing historical features and sharing insights into the Roman period in Herefordshire. You’ll also hear about an archaeological dig that will be taking place at The Weir Garden in July 2025.

This is a free event (normal admission to The Weir Garden applies). There’s no need to book. Let our visitor welcome team know when you arrive that you would like to join the walk.

Subject to availability on the day.
